Cloaked in a dark, wintery atmosphere, this selection begins with an incantatory melody from the Middle Ages; a cantus firmus by Guillaume Durfay. Composer Quincy Hilliard puts his own mark on the ancient material by building to a rousing, blues-tinged section in the middle, and the piece returns to the reflective opening before concluding with a valiant flourish.
