FROM EARTH TO SKY

The themes of the work are based on a descending bass line (earth), which is juxtaposed by an ascending line above it (sky). This is most apparent beginning in the slow section in the woodwinds, who have the ascending line in two broken octaves over a descending bass line in one octave in extended time. The form is tripartite, with elements from the opening theme returning in the closing theme, sandwiched around a slower middle contrasting theme.
