How to Use Bastien New Traditions in Distance Learning

Dear Colleagues,
IPS Distance Learning
Many of you are beginning to teach online piano lessons as we all come together in response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). If you are using Bastien New Traditions: All in One Piano Course, you already have everything you need.

A few easy steps:

  1. Have students activate the free INTERACTIVE Practice Studio (IPS) on their desktop computer, tablet, or phone using the instructions on the inside cover of their New Traditions book.
  2. Give regular assignments verbally when online and follow up with email. Include specific teaching instructions that apply to each student.
  3. Have students practice the assigned pages with the IPS accompaniment recordings using the slowest tempo and looping features to facilitate learning and accuracy.
  4. Give students the option of recording their performances using the in-app Recording Studio, then emailing those recordings to you using the in-app email tool. Their recording may include student counting, counting and clapping, singing, and/or playing the exercise.
  5. Assign specific pieces and/or passages for students to record for your evaluation. Have students continue to prepare for future recitals and festivals by practicing with the recordings using slow, medium, and fast tempos for maximum benefits.
  6. Have students (or their parents) click the gold stars to check theory exercises and review pages against the Answer Key pages.

All of us at Kjos extend to you our best wishes for the safety, security, and health of you, your families, and your students.

Sincerely,

Mark Kjos
